In New York, divorce requires one spouse to be a resident of the state for at least one year before the start of the divorce action. Exceptions to this requirement include adultery, abandonment, and cruel and inhuman treatment. To establish residency, a person must demonstrate a physical presence in the state through documents like a valid New York driver's license, voter registration, tax returns, and utility bills. If the Residency Requirements for Divorce in New York is not met, the court may dismiss the divorce action or transfer it to another state. It is essential to consult with an attorney to determine if the residency requirement can be met and discuss alternative options. The New York State Unified Court System, New York City Bar Association, American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and National Center for State Courts provide resources for understanding residency requirements for divorce in New York.

Hey Subway Surfers Online Do the exceptions (adultery, abandonment, cruel and inhuman treatment) waive the residency requirement completely, or do they just provide additional grounds for divorce?
